Where to stay in Denver, CO? I am traveling with my husband and 2 year old son.?

We are trying to decide if Denver would be a good fit for us-as our new home. We only have 4 days, but want to try and get a good feel for the area. Any suggestions for areas to stay? We both love the urban feel with restaurants, coffee shops etc...but of course, we need to be in a safe area of town. I've heard Cherry Creek is a good option? Thoughts? Any help would be so greatly appreciated! Thx! We need to cover as much ground as possible.
