What stopped the other colonizing nations from grabbing Australia in the 18 years after Captain Cook?
Things moved slowly back in those days, some of the sailing voyages took years from start until return, many of the expeditions were unsuccessful, ships were often lost or sunk never to be heard from again, other nations just could not do things on such a grand scale as Britain, even the British took years to raise the funds required and make arrangements for the voyage, the French had reached the east coast of Australia almost exactly the same day as the First Fleet after a voyage of two and a half years but their mission was for scientific research and not set up to colonize, it was not as simple as just putting up a flag somewhere and reciting that you hereby claim this land then disappearing for years or decades with the hope that your claim would be valid when you got back, the British had sent about 1500 people as well as tools, livestock and building materials and skilled craftsmen to set up a colony, once they landed on the mainland they never left.
