Maybe you could compare Australia to a colony of say Spain eg Argentina and compare the history cutures and style of government. They are very very different- Argentina has a huge gap between the rich and poor, and they've had military dictatorships controlled by the wealthy elite, whereas Australlia is egalitarian and has always been a stable democracy.
