Just bought a cast net dont know where to catch my bait fish at?

i just bought a cast net from ***** sporting good. already conditioned it with fabric softener and hot water. it is hanging up drying right now. my question now is where do i use it at. i live in central illinois. there is a small creek/river 300 feet away from my house. but i dont want to use it there because the current is extremely strong. there are multiple ponds around me tho. im looking to catch shad and minnows. looking for a little guidance. thank you all in advance.
